Hot Topics Day – Call for Proposals

RTSS 2019 Hot Topics Day Call for Proposals

RTSS 2019 will for the first time host a Hot Topics Day (HTD) that highlights emerging research topics related to real-time systems. The HTD will feature a combination of workshops (full-day or half-day), special sessions, and/or tutorials. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: autonomous systems such as autonomous vehicles and robots, real-time machine learning, safety, reliability and security of learning-based systems, industrial automation, smart manufacturing and industry 4.0, education/preparation of the workforce for real-time systems, 5G enabled real-time applications, real-time cyber-physical systems, and Internet-of-Things. Visionary talks on cutting edge research and topics are particularly welcome.

RTSS 2019 seeks proposals for the HTD workshops, special sessions and tutorials. Workshops provide a forum for discussing timely topics with some specific focus. Special sessions intend to present invited talks on visionary and emerging topics. Tutorials offer their attendees specific knowledge and background necessary for understanding technical advances in relevant areas.

Proposals should be sent via e-mail as PDF or ASCII text to the Hot Topics Day Chairs:

While submitting a proposal, please indicate whether the proposal is for a workshop, special session or tutorial, and please tag it with “[RTSS 2019 HTD: …]” in the subject of the email.

Important dates (same for all HTD events unless specified otherwise):

  • Event proposals due: June 26, 2019, 23:59 UTC-12
  • Event acceptance notification: July 5, 2019
  • Event preliminary website online (with initial CFP if needed): July 19, 2019
  • Special session and tutorial papers/presentations draft due: September 23, 2019

Evaluation of the proposals will consider its general interest to the RTSS attendees, the quality of the proposal, and the expertise of the organizers and contributors. Please see below for each specific call.

The purpose of the HTD workshops is to provide a forum for discussing emerging topics of interest to the real-time systems community, including topics beyond those traditionally presented in the main RTSS conference. The workshop proposals should include:

  • title of the workshop;
  • abstract of the workshop, including rationale and target audience;
  • estimated audience size (the HTD event selection committee reserves the right to cancel the workshop if too few attendees are registered);
  • contact information of the organizer(s), including name, email, and affiliation for the workshop chair(s) and PC chair(s);
  • short biography of the organizer(s);
  • potential contributors, e.g., presenters, panelists;
  • duration (full-day or half-day);
  • proposed format, e.g., keynotes, invited and contributed talks, panels, poster sessions;
  • proposed plan for paper selection and publication (if any);
  • proposed sponsorship (if any);
  • special technical or audio/video needs; and
  • any other relevant information.

The purpose of the HTD special sessions is to focus on a special topic area and present state-of-the-art advances or perspectives. The talks are typically given by leading researchers in the focused area. Each special session typically runs for 1.5 hours and consists of 3 talks. The special session proposals should include:

  • title of the special session;
  • abstract of the special session, including rationale and target audience;
  • estimated audience size (the HTD event selection committee reserves the right to cancel the session if too few attendees are registered);
  • contact information of the organizer(s), including name, email, and affiliation of the special session chair(s);
  • short biography of the organizer(s);
  • working title and brief abstract/scope of each talk;
  • presenters and their short biographies;
  • special technical or audio/video needs; and
  • any other relevant information.

The purpose of the HTD tutorials is to educate attendees about specific topics or to provide the background necessary for understanding technical advances in relevant areas. The tutorial should be appealing to a wide audience with interests in the proposed content. Each tutorial typically runs for 1.5 hours. Longer tutorials with two sessions of 1.5 hours may be considered. The tutorial proposals should include:

  • title of the tutorial;
  • abstract of the tutorial, including rationale and target audience;
  • estimated audience size, including information on whether similar tutorial had been given before and the approximate size of the audience then (the HTD event selection committee reserves the right to cancel the tutorial if too few attendees are registered);
  • contact information of the presenter(s), including name, email, and affiliation;
  • short biography of the presenter(s);
  • proposed duration (typically 1.5 hours; or two sessions of 1.5 hours);
  • special technical or audio/video needs; and
  • any other relevant information.

All workshop PC chairs and special session chairs are required to commit to attending RTSS 2019 HTD and chairing their respective events in person. According to the RTSS CoI guidelines, workshop PC chairs and special session chairs are NOT eligible to submit papers to their own events. Workshop PC chairs and special session chairs shall send the list of accepted papers and authors to the RTSS HTD chairs and RTSS program chair prior to sending out the acceptance notification of their events.
